We're going to be in Washington in early June and would like to take a boat to see orcas. We're pretty sure we'll spend one night either in Anacortes or close by, then catch the ferry to Orcas Island, maybe have time to see San Juan Island. Can anyone recommend a couple of orca watching boats? I've found one from Anacortes, recommended on other forums, called Island Adventures, but it looks like it carries lots of passengers. We'd like something with fewer passengers.

Thanks,
Virginia

Hello Virginia,

Orcas Island does have a few whale watch companies that leave from there (Orcas Island Eclipse, Deer Harbor Charters) but most of the companies are directly out of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Our company is San Juan Excursions and we depart our dock, located next to the ferry landing in Friday Harbor, daily at 12:00 Noon. Our trip last 3.5-4 hours and are boat is quite spacious and comfortable and we also have two restrooms on board. Our boat can carry up to 80 passangers but this time of year we usually have around 25 so there is plenty of space to move about the boat. We have two certified marine naturalist on board to inform you about our local wildlife. It's a great, informative trip and a lot of fun!

Hi Virginia,
I would recommend Outer Island Expeditions, located just outside of the Eastsound village, on Orcas Island. They provide a quality personal tour on smaller boats, with exceptionally qualified local captains. I have done some business with these folks in the past, and they really do whatever they can to facilitate a unique and authentic San Juan Island experience. Their number is 360 376-3711

Cheers!
