Recommendations needed for first-time visitors to the San Juan Islands

My husband and I are planning our first visit to the Islands and we'll be bringing our 10-year-old and 14-year-old for a weekend stay.
Which island is best for a "home base"? We're looking for a hotel or B&B that is teen-friendly (if there is such thing

).
What are the sights we shouldn't miss? We'd like recommendations for sites that will teach us about the natural history of the area (particularly geology).

Audrey, glad to hear you are planning your first trip to the San Juan Islands. You're going to have a wonderful experience no matter which island you choose to stay on. If you have more than a couple days and are not traveling with too much luggage you might think about taking a scenic ferry ride to another island for a night or two. All three of the islands; Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan have lodging that is children friendly.

Here is a free online book produced by the University of Washington; you could probably use it to research which of the islands has the most interesting geology. You can even print out the best pages. Link: geology of the San Juan Islands

Hello,

You might consider Orcas Island as your "home base" for your getaway and West Beach Resort (www.westbeachresort.com) as your home! We do have a weekly minimum during the summer (late June - Aug), and weekends are pretty full other times but please check for openings. We are definitely child- and teen-friendly with lots of activities right here at our resort... plus you can't beat your own fully equipped cabin right on the beach! Fishing, crabbing (check seasons), clamming, kayaking, canoeing, charters, tours, boat rentals, etc. right here from our resort. Orcas is very beautiful with Moran State Park and public beaches.

I agree that Orcas is a beautiful, however, I feel I must put in a plug for San Juan Island. There are several B&B's that can accommodate teenagers and it is the only island were the ferry lands right in the main town (Friday Harbor) so you don't really need a car to enjoy the island. You can check out the many B&B's by going to the San Juan Island B&B Association's web site (www.san-juan-island.net). It's a great island for wildlife watching, biking, kayaking or other outdoor activities. There a numerous really good eateries and lot's of live entertainment such as music and theater.
