Orcas and San Juan Island Transportation

I will be visiting the San Juans mid-June with my Mom (85 years old) and six other family members. We'll arrive into Seattle by train and wanted to know if I should rent a car in Seattle and take it over to the islands or if there is adequate transportation on the islands to get around. Appreciate any information/suggestions you can provide.

Having your own transport here in the islands is essential to getting the most out of the vacation. Most of the beaches, viewpoints, villages, art studios, etc are scattered around each island.
Renting cars or a big van would be very economical given your party of 8. You can rent in seattle or you can rent at the Orcas Island Ferry Landing or in downtown Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Lopez doesn't have car rentals as of May 2010. You will save by renting in Seattle unless you have a cheap ride up to the San Juans.
