I'm looking for somewhere where I could maybe pitch a tent for a night for free on san juan. Possibly even have a fire? If anyone could help me out that would be great!

Unfortunately there are no free places to camp on San Juan Island.  I think as an individual hiker, biker, or kayaker you can get a campsite for five dollars per night at San Juan County Park.  But you will need to doublecheck that.  Reservations recommended.

What time of the year are you coming and what sort of transportation do you have?

See that is the problem, the county campsite is full and I am looking at another site that is far too expensive. I am going to be coming to San Juan on the 5th and 6th of June. Is there usually much opportunity for scoring someone's cancelled reservations? We're just a couple of poor college students wanting to see the whales Sad

You would have to check with the parks about the possibility of scoring someone's canceled reservations.

Bringing your car on the ferry might be a good idea depending on what kind of car it is.  If you have room to sleep in your car/utility vehicle you could find a safe place to park and sleep there.  Hot showers are available at the port of Friday Harbor Marina.

Moran State Park on Orcas has camp sites available.

 It's  about a $10 ferry ride back to San Juan Island but check the schedule to see if it works for you.
