I would recommend staying one or two days on each island and a combination of the camping life and the good life. Making one island home base would require that you make the same trip back home every evening. Even though the ferry rides are relaxing and offer some of the best scenery and it is very easy and quite inexpensive to travel in between the islands I would prefer to have the flexibility to stay on multiple islands. Eliminating that extra travel time back to home base would give you extra time to explore the nooks and crannies and oddities of each islands unique personality. You also wouldn't have to worry about staying on "schedule."
A "schedule" is something I do at work and want no part of on my vacations.
