I live on Vancouver Island and interested in visiting San Juan.  I also have a dog.  Are there any regulations I have to comply with in order to bring him with me on my trip?

You might want to call 888-808-7977 [Wa. And B.C.] to triple check for any changes but normally pets can ride the ferries but must be on a leash and stay on the lower car deck. Same goes for international crossings. If you have a pet carrier they can come up to the more comfy upper levels of the ferry. The ferry won't give you a problem with the dog but the customs people might.  You need to have paperwork from the vet showing that the dog's shots are up to date.  We took our dog to Waterton Park in Canada and the US customs gave us a hard time because our paperwork had a different date from when the shot had been given.  (The vet had printed us up a complete new set just before we left and it had a date different from the shot.)  Luckily we also had the original paper too which had the correct dates so we got in.

Thanks for the heads up on the customs.... you would think they would mention that on the WSF site. Did they threaten to detain your dog or put everyone back on the ferry?

We were in our car.  We visited Glacier National Park then went over the border to Canada's section called Waterton.  No problems getting in but the US Customs gave us a hard time about the paperwork.  We found a copy with the correct date on it and they let us in.  Don't know what they would have done if we hadn't.

I took him another time to Vancouver.  Again no problem getting in to Canada.  On the way back they asked if I had any dog food.  I had two meals of dry dog food for him just in case we missed the ferry on the way back and I had put it in a old Goldfish bag.  They carefully inspected the dog food then decide it was OK to bring it and the dog into the country.

I've made a new pet friendly guide to the San Juan Islands... it is a work in progress.
